Cara Black and Liezel Huber win US Open women’s doubles title

Cara Black and Liezel Huber beat Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur a 6-3, 7-6 (6) Sunday to win their first U.S. Open women’s doubles championship.

It’s the fourth Grand Slam tournament title, and 20th title overall, as a team for the top-seeded Black and Huber. They also won Wimbledon in 2005 and 2007, and the Australian Open in 2007.

They didn’t drop a single set at Flushing Meadows.

Black also won this year’s U.S. Open mixed doubles title, pairing with Leander Paes to beat Huber and Jamie Murray.

When the women's doubles match ended, Black and Huber dropped their rackets, shrieked and hopped into each other’s arms for a hug.

The 10th-seeded Raymond and Stosur, the 2005 U.S. Open champions, also were the runners-up at Wimbledon this year, losing to Venus and Serena Williams in that final. The Williams sisters didn’t enter the U.S. Open doubles event.

Andy Murray stuns Rafael Nadal in US Open semifinals

It turns out the rain delay in the men's semifinals between Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal is not exactly a blessing for the latter.

Murray continued and finished a stunning victory over Nadal 6-2, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 at the U.S. Open last night to reach his first ever Grand Slam final.

The sixth-seeded Murray won the first two sets and was down a break at 3-2 in the third when play was suspended Saturday because of Tropical Storm Hanna.

He is trying to become the first British man to win a major tennis championship since Fred Perry at the 1936 U.S. Open.

Murray will face four-time defending U.S. Open champion Roger Federer in the delayed Monday night’s final. Federer beat Novak Djokovic in four sets in a semifinal that was completed before the rain arrived Saturday.

Federer beats Djokovic at the US Open; other matches postponed

Had Novak Djokovic won Saturday and gone on to win the championship, he would have surpassed Roger Federer in the rankings, dropping the longtime No. 1 all the way to No. 3.

However, Federer who has won 33 consecutive matches and four consecutive championships at the U.S. Open dismissed Djokovic 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Now Federer is closing in on his 13th Grand Slam title.

In the meanwhile Tropical Storm Hanna carry chaos to Flushing Meadows, dumping enough rain to suspend the other men’s semifinal between Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal which was in progress and postpone the women’s final between Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic.

The men’s final at Louis Armstrong stadium was delayed until Monday for the first time since 1987, giving Federer plenty of time to rest. He also was going to be able to do some scouting Sunday when his nemesis, new No. 1 Rafael Nadal, was to resume his semifinal against Andy Murray. They stopped Saturday with Murray leading 6-2, 7-6 (5), 2-3.
