Had Novak Djokovic won Saturday and gone on to win the championship, he would have surpassed Roger Federer in the rankings, dropping the longtime No. 1 all the way to No. 3.
However, Federer who has won 33 consecutive matches and four consecutive championships at the U.S. Open dismissed Djokovic 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. Now Federer is closing in on his 13th Grand Slam title.
In the meanwhile Tropical Storm Hanna carry chaos to Flushing Meadows, dumping enough rain to suspend the other men’s semifinal between Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal which was in progress and postpone the women’s final between Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic.
The men’s final at Louis Armstrong stadium was delayed until Monday for the first time since 1987, giving Federer plenty of time to rest. He also was going to be able to do some scouting Sunday when his nemesis, new No. 1 Rafael Nadal, was to resume his semifinal against Andy Murray. They stopped Saturday with Murray leading 6-2, 7-6 (5), 2-3.

Serena Williams secures a place in the final after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dinara Safina in the U.S. Open semifinals last night. Probably that wicked backhand Williams zinged off the Russian’s shoulder in the second set. “Overall, she’s, I think, the strongest player on the tour, together with her sister,” Jankovic said.
“Nobody has the power that they have. We cannot compare.”
Jankovic who also made it to the final at the U.S. Open after beating Olympic champion Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4 must figure something.
However that is, if the weather permits. With Tropical Storm Hanna getting closer and rain in the forecast, tournament organizers made contingency made that could mean postponing the match until Sunday. “I’m going to try my best and that’s all I care about,” Jankovic said, “even if it’s tomorrow or next day or in a week.”

Recently Maria Sharapova not only unveiled her limited edition and overpriced Canon PowerShot Diamond Collection but also her one-armed dress. Perhaps it has something to do with her shoulder injury which prevents her from participating in the U.S. Open.
At the event, five of the PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH cameras, designed in conjunction with Amosu, encrusted with 88 white diamonds totaling 2.22 carats, valued at approximately $10,000 and were to be awarded to lucky winners in sweepstakes.
