BMW Malaysian Open shows interest in Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic

BMW Malaysian Open is back in action on Facebook and announced that they'll be making some interesting announcements over the next couple of weeks.

In an article published on NST in January, it was reported that the tournament has shown interest in Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic. Both players have never played in the tournament before.

Williams was supposed to play in the 2012 edition but withdrew due to illness and injury.

This year, the BMW Malaysian Open will take place on April 14-21 at the Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur.

During the Australian Open in January, Williams was shown the early exit. It was only the second time Williams had lost in the first round of the Australian Open in 14 appearances. This week, Williams didn't get to pass the second round after losing to Petra Kvitova in three sets at the Qatar Open. It is unknown if she is fully fit to play in the next couple of months as she has been struggling with back injury, fatigue and inconsistency.

Ivanovic also suffered a second round loss at the Qatar Open. Earlier this year, she had quite a successful run claiming the Auckland title and reached the quarterfinal round at the Australian Open.

Francesca Schiavone, Ayumi Morita support The Power Over Cervical Cancer

The on-going BMW Malaysian Open 2011 today spread its influence and reach for a good cause as Francesca Schiavone, along with Ayumi Morita, Shuko Aoyama and Chan Chin Wei took time off their busy schedules to support a good cause, ‘The Power Over Cervical Cancer (POCC) – Helping To Protect Every Woman’.

which is an integrated communications campaign on Cervical Cancer Education and Awareness, by the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).

At the NCSM’s headquarters, the players met with the NCSM’s management and staff who run an invaluable service for women in helping and aiding women to discuss with their healthcare professionals (HCPs), on medical problems and issues while seeking protection against cervical cancer with pap smears and vaccinations.

The players were also taken on a tour of the NCSM’s headquarters and facilities, as they met and mingled with cancer survivors, current patients undergoing treatment and medical consultation, as well as local celebrity ambassadors who champion NCSM’s causes and activities, such as Sarimah Ibrahim, Genevieve Sambhy, and the Chong sisters Vanessa and Pamela.

Schiavone with a young patient

Schiavone, who turned up at NCSM despite nursing an injury picked up during yesterday’s match, said, “I am passionate about charitable causes such as NCSM’s POCC campaign as back in Italy, I have friends who are both cancer patients and doctors who treat cancer patients. Off and on, every couple of months I go to a big private hospital near my home and stay there for as long as I can to lend my support and help out in whatever way that I can, as it is a great experience and I will continue to do so as long as I can.”

Jetstar hosts kids at Aces Charity Tennis Clinic with Zhang Shuai

Jetstar hosted a special Aces Tennis Clinic with Zhang Shuai today.

The event was meant for young children from the Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Yatim Dan Miskin Wawasan Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, (PKKKYDMWPDNS), formerly known as New Life Care Centre.

At the fun-filled visit, the children picked up fundamental tennis skills from their inspiring coach, the up and coming Chinese tennis player Zhang.

Zhang Shuai began playing tennis at the age of 6 and she has earned the record of the lowest-ranked player to ever defeat a reigning world no. 1 in a WTA main tour event, beating Dinara Safina at the 2009 China Open.

Dinara Safina in Kuala Lumpur for BMW Malaysian Open

Dinara Safina, currently ranked no.112, made an appearance at the BMW Malaysian Open presser a moment ago.

Although she made into the tournament's Main Draw, she refused to comment much about her chance here nor making it into the top 10 or no.1 spot again.

According to Safina, she just wanted to be healthy and wouldn't think much.

At the presser, the tournament organiser assured the media that besides Francesca Schiavone, another top 10 player will be making her way to Malaysia too.

The recipient of the wild card will be announced in a couple of days and it will depend on the results in Doha.

I predict it could be Jelena Jankovic or Vera Zvonareva... could be Caroline Wozniacki too depending how much the organiser would pay for her appearance.

That's it for now. I'll come back with more updates on the BMW Malaysian Open soon.
